1. Get Your Free Credit Reports

You’re entitled to a free copy of your credit report every year from each of the three main credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Call 1-877-FACT-ACT (877-322-8228) and ask for the three (3) credit reports: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion or go to to get it and review for errors.

2. Review Your Report Carefully

Most common mistakes:

  • An incorrect address
  • Misspellings of your name
  • Incorrect Social Security Number
  • Wrong date of birth
  • Creditors you don’t recognize
  • Incorrect balance amounts
  • Late payments you don’t recognize
  • Civil judgment that is not yours, or paid but still listed as “due”

3. Write a Dispute Letter

This needs to be sent in writing to the reporting agency. Include the account name and number and the reason for the dispute. Do NOT file online disputes as you may be subject to arbitration and not the civil court system.

4. Keep Each Dispute Separate

If you notice multiple errors in your report, write a separate dispute letter for each one.

5. Keep Proof of Mailing of Your Dispute Letter

You can mail the dispute through regular mail but make sure to copy the envelope and write the date of mailing under the stamp.

6. They Need To Respond Within 30 Days

Credit reporting agencies have 30 days to respond to your dispute letter from the date they receive it.

7. Send a Dispute Letter to the Creditor Directly

You can also send a written dispute to the creditor directly and they are required to update your account as disputed to the reporting agencies. Failure to do so may be a violation under the FCRA, FDCPA, and FCCPA.

8. Seek Legal Help

Our office can assist you with your dispute process to the credit reporting agencies and creditors free of charge. Under the FRCA, FDCPA, and FCCPA, you are entitled to money damages and your legal fees paid by the credit bureaus or the furnisher of your credit information.
